Chick Stout Isn’t Your Average “Girl Beer”

Words by: Quincy Malesovas

One of the beautiful things about gender equality is that it gives people the power to do whatever they want. Rather than be judged and stereotyped by their gender identity, told they need to like certain things and act certain ways, true gender equality eschews these restrictions in favour of true freedom.

Feminism isn’t telling women they need to go to work or wear pants or drink beer to embody their “empowerment”. It just provides the space to do so if they choose while also accepting that if they want to practice traditionally “feminine” beaviours, that’s okay too.

The intention behind our recently-brewed Chick Stout (made in collaboration with Froth Magazine) isn’t to make some big, bold statement that women must drink dark beers, or beer at all. But, considering so many beers marketed at women are light and pale and fruity while most dark, strong, viscous brews are targeted at men, we wanted to flip that stereotype on its head. The beer was also an excuse to showcase some great female brewers we have the privelige of working.

This “chick stout” welcomes all kinds of drinkers, although it is best suited to those who fancy brown ales, porters or stouts with hints of chocolate, coffee and caramel. If you’ve yet to delve into the world of dark brews because you’ve been told you “should” opt for lighter varieties, this is your chance to rebel against those societal norms.

Burnley’s First Beerthday Celebration

It’s been 12 months since the first beers were poured at Burnley Brewing, with a whirlwind first year set to culminate in a massive birthday bash. To celebrate our first annum in operation, we’re showcasing a selection of our best original brews plus a few new ones we’re really keen on, along with a few tastes of delicious food from our Italian-inspired menu.

Expect tastes off the tank, some complimentary nibbles, live music and visual art to entertain you on the evening. We’ll also be serving two special pizzas (Garlic Prawn and our vegan alternative, Garlic Eggplant) made using spent grain leftover from our brewing process. It’s both healthy and environmentally-friendly! You can try these pies for $24 from November 29 while supplies last.

We’ll also be pouring celebratory beerthday tasting paddles for $18 from the 30th onwards, which offer a taste of the best Burnley beers from past to present, including our Pale Ale, Vienna Lager, Dry Stout, Weizen, Cucumber Kolsch and Passionfruit Berliner Weisse.

But that’s not the only thing to look forward to… In our first year, we brewed a whopping 32 brews, so it seems only fitting that our birthday celebration would coincide with the launch of our two new tinnies which will accompany our Pale Ale and Vienna Lager. If you’re wondering what the fresh additions will be, you’ll just have to join us for our birthday party, where we’ll be offering tastes of the new beers before they hit the shelves of your local, independent bottle shop. Otherwise, keep a very close eye on our social media accounts for updates.

As you can see, 2018 has been a great year for Burnley Brewing. We plan to set the bar even higher next year with a challenge to create 52 beers in 52 weeks! Will our head brewer Michael Stanzel be able to reach his goal? Only time will tell.

But for now, let’s focus on the task at hand – Making sure that our first birthday is one to remember! Will you help us out? Tell your friends and RSVP here to confirm your attendance. We can’t wait to party with you.

Sincerely, Burnley

A Little Sweet, a Little Tart, and Berry Tasty

We know strawberries have gotten a bad rap over the past couple of months. When eating them comes with a risk of an unwanted tongue piercing, who wouldn’t be a bit turned off? But drinking strawberries, on the other hand, has never been safer (or tastier)! We’re not talking about that fake-pink Big M you secretly still enjoy on occasion, nor strawberry cordials or milkshakes or any other “fruit-flavoured” bevvies.

We’re talking about a brand-new Burnley beer bursting with fresh, all-natural strawberries in all their glory. Our Tart Strawberry Pale Ale is just as bright in taste as it is in colour. It’s a non-traditional take on our signature Pale Ale, a bit of a flamboyant cousin, if you will. It’s far less hoppy than the pale but just as bold. It makes a great beer for people who like wine or cider or who simply appreciate a fruitier ale. And it’s available now for a limited time only.

If you would like to try this new, tangy brew, pop into the brewery any day from 12pm. We can’t wait to see you!
