Our Story

We’re a forward thinking crew committed to enjoying the simple things. If you ask us, the best things in life are free: building connections, making memories and having fun. We want to be part of the movement to drink better and live better. Our parents always told us to be nice to people, and we agree that’s the most important lesson we could learn. Keen for a beer? The other thing can wait.

The Burnley is designed to be everyone’s local, an inclusive place to share a drink or bite with a focus on quality and education. We want to enable people to have fun and drink better, and if we can teach them a thing or two about beer along the way we’re even happier.

So, who are we?

Renton has a farm in country Victoria and seriously loves wine.  He’s one of the brains behind a stack of Melbourne’s best wine bars, including The Milton Wine Shop, Toorak Cellars, The Alps, The Moon, The Hills and Brisbane’s The Valley. Neil was an accountant in a former life, but soon realized the old 9 to 5 was not for him. He started his first hospitality business at just 23, entering the brewing industry via a stint at Spark Breweries and Distilleries. Phil’s a man of many cafes, having established nine hospitality businesses across Melbourne and New York, including Small Print Pizza Bar, Hard Pressed Coffee, Pedro Espresso, Saint James Café, Seven Point Espresso and These Days Coffee Roasting. Given his global connections, at least one of Phil’s businesses is open at any given time.

Together with head brewer Michael Stanzel, the first Australian to attain the prestigious Brewer and Maltster apprenticeship accreditation exclusive to the German brewing scene, this team of young guns is set to make a splash in the Yarra.

We love being a local as much as we love drinking local. We’re proud to be one of the key sponsors for the Head of the Yarra regatta. Billed Australia’s rowing classic, the annual event is hosted by Hawthorn Rowing Club, with the finish line just across the road.  If you’ve got a suggestion for how we can get involved, shoot us an email hello@burnleybrewing.com.au.

The environment is important. Which is why our up-to-the-minute brewing equipment from Spark Breweries and Distilleries implements energy and water efficient technologies. Spent grain is fed to the pigs at Renton’s family farm in country Victoria, where our long-term vision is to grow hops for our beers and produce for our kitchen. Watch this space!
